Building Type: High School Campus
Status: HONORABLE MENTION “TUBITAK Science High School Complex Competition”
Area: 30,890 m2
Site: Gebze, Turkey
Year: 2022
Main campus building mass follows the contour of the site, thus minimizes excavation and site disruption. A main access to the campus is at the bottom of the hill, along east end of the site. Dormitories are located at North West corner of the site, and has a separate vehicular entry and parking area.
A site for the school complex is on a gently sloping hill. This proposed campus design respects its sloping landscape, and further play it up by introducing cascading terraces. This stepping of building mass creates large void underneath, where a sports facility and a multipurpose hall are proposed.
First two levels housed science labs. A cafeteria and its back of the house is located on the ground floor with direct access to loading berth for ease of produce deliveries.
Terraces created by staggering floors become outdoor classrooms & study lounge. What we discovered and learned through COVID-19 Pandemic is importance & assets of bringing activities outdoor.
The building fans out towards North West, where its “spread” of floor slabs creates slits of skylights and bring ample daylight throughout the building.
The space created underneath the floor slabs are the sports facility and the multipurpose hall, with generous ceiling height. There is a visual connection to that public space from classroom / science lab corridors, promoting openness and unity within the campus.
