Building Type: Kiosk (Temporary Structure)
Status: Competition Entry. Chicago Lakefront Kiosk Competition
Site: Millennium Park, Chicago
Year: 2015
The kiosk is made out of 37 layers of XPS panels stacked on top of each other. Each of uniquely shaped undulated panels are cutout from an 8’ x 4’ x 3” thick XPS standard panel, using CNC water jet cutting machine.
A series of vertical threaded metal rods are attached to leveled steel road plates. The panels are then stacked one after another along the metal rods, bolted at the top, thus holding the striated structure in one piece.
Natural light illuminates the interior via six 22” diameter skylights. Polycarbonate door and sliding shutter allows additional daylight into the space while providing protection during off-hours. During off-season, the kiosk maybe closed with additional insulated panel blocks over the door, shelves, and sliding window.
This proposal capitalizes on characteristics and aesthetics of XPS panels in order to spur lakefront activities for all seasons.
