Designing a new contemporary art wing allows the opportunity to simultaneously reinvent the traditional European inspired plaza into a multi-functional landscape. This proposal uses a peeling technique to pull apart the existing surface, weaving various programs together.
"Peeling" in conjunction with use of permeable pavers becomes a process of producing hyper surface which activates pedestrian flow and encourage variety of events to take place.
A combination of upswing and downswing “Peels” shape a new contemporary art wing entry. It is located 9 meter below-grade, guided by sweeping vegetated landscape.
A building section showing subterranean gallery space & sunken courtyard. "Peeling" forms visual connection between the plaza level and the museum. By engaging public, the museum becomes part of the urban experience.
Wheelchair access is provided at the grade level via glass encased elevator, dramatizing an experience of descending into subterranean gallery space.
